THE VEYRAT LEGACY
Veyrat's legacy forms an essential part of Roberto Duato Veyrat’s maternal family history and of the history of horticulture and landscaping in Valencia. It is a tradition which, over several generations, has contributed to Valencia’s botanical, cultural and landscape heritage.
Roberto Duato Veyrat belongs to a long line of landscape architects and horticulturists of French origin, whose surname hails from the Hautes-Alpes. This legacy began in 1865, when Esteban Veyrat Arnol arrived on the Spanish Mediterranean coast and established, in Valencia, a centre for pioneering work in horticulture, landscape architecture and garden design.
From the late 19th century onwards, the Veyrat family received major national honours for the excellence of their work in rose cultivation, fruit tree cultivation and landscaping, and took part in the leading exhibitions of the period. Among their most notable works is the historic Garden of the Count of Trespalacios, situated in the Coto de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, in Béjar (Salamanca), which was declared a Site of Cultural Interest by the Regional Government of Castilla and León in 2005.
The firm’s prestige extended even beyond the realm of botany: an exclusive Veyrat spolin was registered with the Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda in Valencia; a street was named after L’Hort de Veyrat in Valencia; and in 1894, the French rose breeder Alexandre Bernaix created the historic ‘E. Veyrat Hermanos’, which was exhibited at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition and presented once again at the 2024 Iberflora Fair, to mark its revival and subsequent donation to the city of Valencia.
On 7 March 2025, Roberto Duato Veyrat donated this historic variety to the city of Valencia, where it was planted in the rose garden of the Monforte Historic Garden (Hort de Romero).
Subsequently, the variety was declared a Heritage Rose of Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay) by a resolution of the Colonia Municipal Council dated 5 October 2026, with the official recognition taking place on 27 October 2026. The Uruguayan city has a historic district that has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1995.
Continuity: Roberto Duato Veyrat
From the age of seven, Roberto Duato Veyrat discovered his calling by watching his grandfather carry out his gardening and landscape design work. That early contact with nature fostered a deep sensitivity to the landscape, which would later develop into a personal way of understanding the land, the garden and nature as a cultural and emotional expression.
The grandson of the renowned landscape architect Edmundo Veyrat Colín and great-great-grandson of Etienne Veyrat, founder of the family firm, Roberto Duato Veyrat, who trained at the Castillo de Batres School of Landscape Architecture (Madrid), represents the fifth generation of landscape architects in the family.
Through his professional career, he continues a legacy that began in 1865, keeping alive a family tradition rooted in excellence, identity, innovation and landscape culture.
