MATERNAL FAMILY BACKGROUND

The Veyrat legacy

Roberto Duato Veyrat belongs to a historic dynasty of French landscape architects and horticulturists, whose surname originates from the Hautes-Alpes region. This legacy began in 1865, when Esteban Veyrat Arnol arrived in the Spanish Mediterranean and established a pioneering horticulture, landscaping and garden design business in Valencia.

Since the late 19th century, the Veyrat family has been recognised with important national awards for the excellence of its work in rose gardens, fruit trees and landscaping, participating in the major exhibitions of the time. Among its most notable works is the historic Garden of the Count of Trespalacios (Salamanca), declared a Site of Cultural Interest.

The firm's prestige transcended even the botanical world: an exclusive Veyrat espolín was registered at the College of High Art of Silk in Valencia, a street was named after Hort de Veyrat, and in 1894, French rose breeder Alexandre Bernaix created the historic 'E. Veyrat Hermanos" rose in 1894, donated in 2025 by Roberto Duato Veyrat to the city of Valencia and planted in the Rose Garden of the Monforte Historical Garden (Hort de Romero).

Continuity: Roberto Duato Veyrat

From the age of seven, Roberto Duato Veyrat discovered his vocation by watching his grandfather at work in the garden and designing landscapes. That early contact with nature consolidated a deep sensitivity towards the landscape, which would later translate into a personal way of understanding the land, gardens and nature as a cultural and emotional expression.

Grandson of renowned landscape architect Edmundo Veyrat Colín, Roberto Duato Veyrat, trained at the Castillo de Batres School of Landscape Architecture (Madrid), represents the fifth generation of landscape architects in the family, continuing a legacy that began in the mid-19th century, always linked to excellence, tradition and innovation in the art of landscaping.
